family portraits: Charlotte, Vermont
Amidst packing for a camping trip (which I’ll post about later) I got an email from a California family asking if I was available to photograph their large family get-together on the shores of Lake Champlain. 4 generations, 18 people and 8 kids were gathering at the family’s lake house in Charlotte and they thought it wise to hire a photographer to capture the crazy. Great call. The family wanted candids and portraits to remember the occasion by. Perfect! We had a beautiful, sunny day with a nice breeze on one of the greatest lakefronts I’ve seen here. I spent just a couple hours with them but got such a wonderful sense of how this family functions. I saw unique family traditions intertwined in this reunion as family members arrived from Florida, Arizona, California and Maine to see each other again. Very special. One of the family members had just returned from a tour in Afghanistan only the week before. Watching his three children run circles around him, hang from his shoulders and pig pile on top of him was a beautiful and touching thing to witness. His youngest daughter had never really been photographed with the entire family since he had been serving overseas. It was an honor to be able to do that for them.
This impromptu photo session went so smoothly partly due to how fantastic this group was to work with. I’ll admit I didn’t know what to expect with so many young children but they were well-behaved and their energy boosted my energy. These kids were blissfully unaware of my camera so I was able to capture so many fantastic candid moments. Here is just a small selection of what I photographed that day, but they are some of my favorites.
It was at this point that I jokingly ask if they’d adopt me. Hilarious group of people. They brought fake mustaches for some silly shots but ended up laughing most when the little kids danced and made faces to keep them smiling, much like they did to keep the kids smiling for their photos. Perfect.
This little tyke had the greatest, wispy hair. Adorable.
Back from Afghanistan, this soldier was surrounded by adoration from his three young children. They were beaming the entire day. I couldn’t take a bad picture of these guys. Their smiles were infectious.
Grandfathers are so special. I loved this quiet moment as the rest of the group ran wild in the lawn.
Thank you so much guys! It was such an honor to be their for your big reunion. I’m so happy you found me. Safe travels!
